Oscars 2016: Will Leonardo DiCaprio finally win the Academy Award?

For many years it has been a mystery why Leonardo Di'Caprio has not won an Oscar. He is one of the most talented actors of our generation, yet the 41-year old star of films such as the Titanic, The Great Gatsby and Django Unchained has never been honoured.

Di Caprio has been nominated five times in his career, only to walk away empty handed. But for his sixth nomination, he is now the favourite to win Best Actor for his role in The Revenant.

His career began in 1989, and since then he now was 37 Actor credits on IMDB, plus 17 as a producer and two as a writer. He has been nominated 161 times across various awards ceremonies. He has won 44 times, including three Golden Globes, one Bafta, on Screen Actors Guild Award, one People's Choice Award, and two Critics' Choice Award.

His first nomination for the Oscars was in 1994 for his role as Arnie in the dramaWhat's Eating Gilbert Grape. Eleven years later, in 2005, he was noninated for The Aviator for his portrayal of Howar Hughes. In 2007, the nomination was for Blood Diamond. And finally in 2014, Di'Caprio was nominated twice for The Wolf of Wall Street- for best actor and best picture (producer). He is nominated this year for his role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant.

Di'Caprio being snubbed by the Oscars has been made famous by a lot of memes and reecurrent jokes on social media. According to website Know Your Memes, the earliest known mention of Di'Caprio's lack of Oscars came from E! online on 21st February, 2011 titled Do Oscar Voters Really Hate Leonardo Di'Caprio? But it was definitely after his loss as Jordan Belfort in TheWolf of Wall Street that people started questioning if there was something wrong with The Academy.

Di'Caprio;s snubbing by The Academy has been made famous by a lot of memes and recurrent jokes on social media

Di'Caprio is not the only actor to have been snubbed by The Academy. Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Bradd Pitt and Richard Burton have also never been honoured.

The only difference with Di'Caprio is that none of the others got memes, tumblr posts, and support from the web. This could have a great impact on Di'Caprio's likely win on the 28th February. Critics agree that The Revenant is not his best performance, but most observe that his wait has been far too long. So, to the academy, let us all say- give him his Oscar.
