Immigration bill treats devolved governments as "second class"

The immigration bill is a term used to describe amending the current immigration policy of a country. However, as it stands, it shows an attempt by the UK government to avoid the Scottish parliament in key areas, such as: housing and child protection. According to the Scottish Refugee council, Westminster has treated devolved administrations as "second class."

An alliance of housing bodies, including Shelter, is urging the Scottish parliament to call for a halt to the bill- which campaigners believe will encourage landlord discrimination and trafficking. The bill included provisions impacting on licensing, tenancy law, and safeguarding the wellbeing of children.

The UK government plans to invoke wide powers available to the home secretary to legislate at a later date.
