Pennsylvania police fatally shot 12-year-old girl in her own home
A police constable in Pennsylvania killed a 12-year-old when he fired a shot at her father that passed through the man's arm and hit her.
Ciara Meyer was pronounced dead at her home on Monday morning after Constable Clarke Steel made an attempt to "enforce an eviction order" on her family in Duncannon, according to officials.
When the apartment was approahced by Steele, Ciara Meyer's father, Donald Meyer, allegedly opened and shut the door. He then opened the door again, armed with a rifle.
Steele and Meyer shared an exchanged before Meyer "leveled" the rifle at Steele, according to officials. Steele fired one single shot at Meyer, who was hit in the arm, before it passed through and his daughter was hit, police said.
It was estimated by a spokesman for the Pennsylvania police that the incident occured "within seconds".
Meyer, 57, was transported to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries. He was arraigned from the hospital by video and charged with multiple counts, including aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Steele has voluntarily suspended himself, according to Bill Stoessler, spokesman for the Commonwealth Constables Association, where Steele is a member. Constables in Pennsylvania are independent officers that can be elected or appointed, Stoessler said.
Ciara is the 21st person, and first child, to be killed by law enforcement iin the US in 2016 alone.
Perhaps Ciara's death should be a wake up call to America that gun laws need to be seriously address before any other precious lives are lost.
